Part-time NURSE PRACTITIONER (RALEIGH, NC)

at in RALEIGH, NC

Integrative Healthcare Provider: (ARNP)
Occupational Description:
Multi-modality holistic practice seeks Nurse Practitioner with a background in primary care medicine, ideally with experience in infectious diseases and/or Integrative/Holistic medicine. Experience in biochemistry and nutrition a plus. Particularly important are IV skills. Ideally this should begin as a part time position but there is potential to grow into a full time position.
Job Description:
The Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine was established in 1994 by John C. Pittman, M.D. This 1986 Mercer University School of Medicine graduate studied microbiology, biochemistry and nutrition prior to medical school, was trained in pediatrics and emergency medicine. He worked as an ER physician for six years prior to the opening of the Carolina Center. The focus of this practice has been to provide nutritional and complementary therapies to help individuals with chronic diseases, many of whom haven't been helped by conventional medicine, as well as provide preventive health services which go beyond the typical screening procedures utilized in traditional medicine.
Since its founding, the Center has expanded with satellite locations in Greenville, NC with the next location planned in Boone, NC. The range of conditions treated continues to expand to include treatment of a wide range of chronic and degenerative conditions, chronic infections, cancer and environmental toxicity. Therapeutic modalities offered include detoxification, Chelation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, bio-identical hormone therapy, colon hydrotherapy, and IV and oral nutritional therapies. Two main areas of focus include the treatment of autism spectrum disorder including a range of behavioral and leaning issues with children as well as the treatment of chronic infections with the most significant being tick-borne illnesses including Lyme Disease and co-infections such as Bartonella, Babesia and Erhlichia.
Other conditions treated include chronic digestive disturbances, chronic fatigue, autoimmune disorders, atherosclerosis and disorders of circulation, immune dysfunction, degenerative neurologic diseases, diabetes, disorders of hypercalcification, fibromyalgia, heavy metal toxicity, hormone and aging issues, multiple chemical sensitivity, environmental allergies, and weight management.
This position would involve the following tasks:
1. New Patient intake spending the first ½ of the office visit with the patient, then with Dr. Pittman participating during the second half of the 2 hour encounter eventually learning how to do complete initial office visit intakes independently.
2. Follow-up office visits using the same divided time process, eventually learning to handle all office visits independently.
3. Supervision of the IV room -- learning how all IV solutions are made, details of all IV protocols, understanding all aspects of ordering and inventory management, supervising CMA's who actually run the IV room, being able to take over in the event someone is sick or on vacation.
4. Back-Up Phlebotomist and Lab Technician -- learn how to perform and process all labs to be able to be the backup in the event the CMA is sick or on vacation.
5. Supervision of the Office when Dr. Pittman is away -- a primary goal is for the office to be able to continue working whenever Dr. Pittman is out of town, continuing to perform office visits and maintain all
While experience in some aspect of Integrative Medicine would be a plus, it is understood that a significant period of training would be necessary to develop an effective, independent-functioning Integrative Physician Extender capable of managing the variety of conditions we see and understand the use of our therapeutic modalities. In addition to in-office training there will be opportunities to attend scientific training sessions, preceptorships and conferences where additional skills will be acquired.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
MSN, with the completion of a US Department of Education approved Nurse practitioner program.
Three years of current hands on nursing experience in a clinical setting, and at least one (1) year as a Nurse Practitioner. Candidate must have current excellent IV skills as intravenous nutrient and antibiotic therapies are the core component of our practice. Additional testing (see below) will be performed to determine the right candidate.
1. Advanced proficiency in typing:
a. This person needs to be extremely efficient typist in terms of both accuracy and speed, (this is the
primary need in terms of operating the EMR for lengthy intakes).
b. Typing test is required before an offer will be made.
2. Must have recent clinical hands on experience:
a. Preferably in the primary care field or have just come from an academic setting with fresh clinical
skills. Experience in Integrative Medicine a greater priority.
b. A basic medical knowledge test is required before an offer will be made.
3. Must have excellent recent IV skills:
a. Ability to start IV's easily with minimal discomfort to the patient including difficult to find veins.
b. Must have references that specifically comment on IV skills.
4. Interpersonal skills and excellent problem solving skills:
a. Patient satisfaction is critical in our customer-service oriented practice, treating patients as individuals and not numbers. We are cash practice typically with little insurance coverage, so patients are paying out of pocket and expect a high level of customer service.
b. Will eventually be seeing patient's independently so needs to have had experience doing this in prior
clinical settings.
5. Willingness to "go back to school":
a. This job will go beyond the 40 hours in the office and will require homework in terms of
learning everything possible about our areas of specialization.
b. Need to focus on this "back to school" idea for the first several months until protocols have
become more solid and day to day operations are going smoothly.
Hours and Training:
1. Hours will vary depending on a variety of factors. Ideally we would like a candidate who is willing to begin part time so that the practice can accommodate the added expense of a NP who isn't generating much income initially with the goal to expand those hours as proficiency improves and the employee is able to contribute more to her salary.
2. A likely schedule would be to work all day Tuesday, Wednesday and the Saturdays that we are open, typically 2-3 times a month. This could expand to a Monday through Saturday schedule working ½ day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, being closed 1-2 long weekends per month (Friday through Monday).
3. We would like to start at about 30 hours per week during the training period (about 4 to 6 weeks) then full time to 40 hours.
Compensation:
The challenging aspect about bringing in a Nurse Practitioner into an Integrative Medicine practice is the considerably long learning curve to get that provider to the point where significant income can be generated and all costs can be covered. It is important to also recognize that Integrative Practitioners who operate outside the conventional insurance model are not high income generators so compensation for providers is modest. We recognize that in the general word of conventional medicine, NP's are in high demand and can command ever increasing salaries. A goal in hiring a NP is to allow the Carolina Center to increase income beyond our current limitations and be able to improve everyone's compensation but this isn't going to be possible overnight.
This position will ideally start off part time at approximately 20-25 hours a week. Compensation range will be between $30-$40K/year, potentially increasing to full time with a comparable increase in salary.
Interview Process:
There are four (4) steps to the interview process. Only candidates meeting the about criteria will be considered during the initial screening process.
1. Initial screening and interviews will be performed by the Practice Administrator.
2. If you are chosen as a candidate, you will be contacted by the Practice Administrator by telephone and scheduled for the testing process. Two tests will be administered, a typing test (60+wpm with no more than 5 mistakes), and a medical knowledge test (a minimum score of 95%). Tests will be reviewed.
3. Upon completion of the above testing, the best candidates will be selected for a second interview with the physician to determine compatibility and knowledge of Integrative Medicine and diseases. Pay will be discussed during this interview.
4. The top candidates will be schedule for a third interviews with the Practice Administrator and Physician to determine the final the candidate for the position.
No job offer will be done during any interview, the chosen candidate will be informed by telephone and a start date will be given.
Please submit your Resume or CV to the attention of the Practice Administrator. Location: RALEIGH, NC
Compensation: Between 30k and 40k to start off for 20 to 25 hours per week
