Clinical Nurse Specialist - Oncology, Pain & Palliative Care (Kansas City, MO)

JOB SUMMARY
An autonomously functioning advanced practice professional nurse who provides care to selected patients and their families. Functions in support of and in collaboration with other health care team members by serving as an advanced clinical practitioner, consultant, educator, researcher and change agent. Promotes teamwork, collaboration and innovation. Operates within the scope of practice as outlined by the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Delegates appropriately to other staff members.
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
•Demonstrates advanced cognitive, affective and psychomotor capabilities in the nursing assessment, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems.
•Displays value for professional nursing practice including the utilization of current standards, the nursing process and patient advocacy.
•Demonstrates decision-making and problem-solving abilities that provide effective prioritization of patient needs.
•Utilizes current research findings and/or available evidence in the development of nursing practice interventions, policies and procedures, protocols and outcomes.
•Serves as a clinical resource/consultant for nursing and ancillary staff. Makes daily rounds on designated patients to assess and evaluate the pain and symptom management plan, in collaboration with the pain/palliative care team; makes changes as needed.
•Serves as the nurse co-leader for the Palliative Care Consult Service.
•Participates in the development and implementation of patient/family education and discharge/transfer planning. Facilitates programs for cancer education and support.
•Seeks to improve patient and family outcomes through the application of educational concepts and skills.
•Contributes to scientific knowledge base by utilizing, facilitating, conducting, presenting, and publishing scholarly works and research findings.
•Assures ethical and legal practices in the conduct of research.
•Provides leadership in performance improvement activities.
•Utilizes knowledge base related to various development stages of patients and applies this knowledge in the planning and implementation of care for individuals, groups and populations.
•Facilitates shared leadership and the implementation of professional practice.
•Assumes responsibility for own personal and professional development seeking opportunities for learning.
•Utilizes principles of change theory to effect change.
•Acts as a resource to assigned Service Based Councils and participates in house-wide councils as selected.
•Maintains current knowledge base of practice issues and recommends improvement and innovation.
•Participates in the delivery of care as necessary.
•Facilitates the development, implementation, compliance and evaluation of standards of patient care and practice.
•Coordinates the activities related to development, implementation and analysis of clinical pathways with designated physician leaders.
•Performs other duties as assigned.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Participates in institutional committees/task forces which influence or determine policies affecting nursing practice.
•Demonstrates knowledge of cost effective interactions with patients and staff. Seeks to reduce cost of care.
•Works effectively with physicians, other departments and other system entities.
•Participates as directed in IRB process with contracted IRB (KCUMB) and community based Kansas City Clinical Oncology Program (KCCOP) Review Board.
•Provides input into staff performance evaluations.
•Works collaboratively with leadership team to accomplish goals and improve care.
•Participates in system and community activities as requested.
•Creates an environment which promotes collaboration with medical staff.
•Collaborates with oncology unit nurse manager to meet the educational and credentialing needs of the unit.
•Assesses the learning needs of healthcare workers in the areas of pain management, palliative care and oncology. Collaborates with staff, performance consulting department managers and directors to meet identified needs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/TRAINING
•Graduate Degree: MSN
•Other: Bi-annual Human Subject training within 6 months of hire
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS (with minimum requirements indicated as appropriate)
•2 years recent clinical experience in related clinical area, CNS experience preferred.
•1 year recent teaching experience related to nursing.
•Demonstrated experience in managing complex projects.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills intra-departmentally and inter-departmentally.
•Ability to work effectively with professionals of diverse disciplines.
•Ability to deal with individuals in stressful situations using counseling techniques and/or crisis management skills.
•Effective change agent.
•Good working knowledge of management theory and practices, principles of total quality management, group process, coaching, facilitating, supporting and communicating skills, research methodology, statistical tools and variance analysis, health laws and regulations.
•Good working knowledge of system operations.
•Good working knowledge of Medical Staff organization and functions.
•Good working knowledge of data retrieval and analysis, benchmarking, clinical pathway development.
CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES
•Certification in cliical speciality within 1 year of hire - Oncology preferred
•Current RN license in the state of Missouri
•BCLS
•APN certification in the state of Missouri

Compensation: $27.54 - $41.31 /Hour
