Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant -- Thoracic UnitClick Here to ApplyDescriptionThe University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation has an immediate need for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for their  Thoracic Unit in Madison, WI.  This is an excellent opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant interested in learning about Cardio Thoracic Care for both inpatient and outpatient settings.Responsibilities
Responsible for providing comprehensive care to both inpatient (general, intermediate, and ICU care) and outpatients (in the clinic setting)
Demonstrates a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with primarily acute thoracic illnesses, specifically disorders of Thoracic specialty
Provides care both on the floor for general care and ICU patients and in the operating room
Will function as the first assistant for open and minimally invasive (thoracoscopic and laprarscopic) cases in the OR
Educates patients and their families in pre and post operative care in order to promote wellness, prevent additional health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute/chronic illnesses
Develops criteria and participates in the evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of care
Plans and participates in learning opportunities for nursing, physician assistant, and medical students
Works with administrative, nursing, physician, and university faculty to assure quality patient care and to promote education and research
Manages or independently performs evaluative and treatment procedures necessary to provide an appropriate response to life-threatening emergency situations, until the arrival of the physician
Additional Responsibilities
The Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant will practice at the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics and occasionally at a nearby hospital in Madison, WI
May share call responsibilities with other Midlevel Providers for surgical cases and weekend rounds to cover inpatient care
Requirements

Physician Assistant:
Must have State of Wisconsin PA Licensure
Must be a Graduate from an accredited PA Program
Successful completion of NCCPA examination
Nurse Practitioner:
Certification appropriate to practice area
Certificate as an advanced practice nurse prescriber or qualifies to obtain certificate as appropriate



Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
Master’s Degree in Nursing with specialty preparation as a Nurse Practitioner


Additional Requirements:
Extensive knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and management of acute and chronic patient/family health problems
CPR Certified
Excellent verbal and written communication skills





Preferred:
Two years relevant clinical experience (cardio-thoracic, pulmonary, oncology, surgical, or thoracic ICU) preferred
